March 2008 Chapter Meeting

Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 11:30am-1:00pm
Topic: Workplace Violence

  • What triggers violent behavior in people?
  • What are the warning signs?
  • What workplace factors contribute to violence?

Violence in the workplace is a serious safety and health issue. Its most extreme form, homicide, is the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. Research on workplace violence has shown that warning signs almost always precede acts of violence. Also, most perpetrators of violent acts fit one or more profiles. Managers and supervisors should be trained to recognize these profiles and warning signs, enabling them to provide intervention or seek assistance before problems escalate. In addition, managers and supervisors require training in techniques and procedures for safe and appropriate responses to situations of threat.

Guest Speaker: David A. Smith, Chairman/CEO and Co-Founder of Professional Workplace Interaction, Inc.

Mr. Smith has extensive experience in executive management, training, field operations, and financial management. He has conducted extensive Behavioral Risk Management training for university personnel, government agencies, Fortune 500 and private corporations across the United States and Canada. Mr. Smith has spoken on this topic at various national conventions, including, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and the Public Risk Management Association, (PRIMA).
