ASSE SOCIETY

ASSE Proposes Governance Restructure

In the nearly 20 years since ASSE last changed its governance structure, much has changed in the SH&E profession and the world, including how ASSE members engage with the Society based more on their specific practice needs and common interests than on their geographic location. To respond to those changes and create an ASSE that is better able to respond effectively, nimbly and efficiently to evolving needs, ASSE’s Board of Directors recently approved in principle a proposed model for restructuring ASSE’s governance structure. “ASSE is in the midst of change,” explains Society President Richard A. Pollock, CSP, in his April 2013 President’s Message in Professional Safety.  ”ASSE is striving to create a structure that engages members beyond where they live and focuses on who they are, what they do, where they work and the solutions they need.”

Here are just a few of the key proposed changes:

  • Decrease BOD from 15 to 9 members.
  • Add one public member.
  • Elect 8 BOD members Society-wide.
  • Separate governance function from operations function.
  • Eliminate the Executive Committee.
  • Expand regions (anticipated) for additional chapter support.

Learn more about the initiative at http://restructure2013.asse.org.

CONCLUSION

I hope you will consider volunteering for one of the open chapter positions and participating in chapter meetings and workshops. The Chapter needs your expertise and support in providing added value to our members.  If you have any comments, suggestions, or questions, please contact me at tsbutlerjr@aol.com

We are very pleased to let all our members know that the Long Beach ASSE Nomination Committee has met and has developed an outstanding slate of officers for the 2011 - 2012 year.  The Nomination Committee consisted of Tom Butler, Don Rhodes, and Dwight Graham.

As a professional society, the lifeblood of our efforts to promote the safety profession rests in the dependence on voluntary contributions of our members.  In addition, the progress and success of our chapter depends on the support of the members to the elected officers.   We currently have the following slate of officers:

President                              Marianne Thomas CSP
President Elect                     Open
Vice President                      Don Rhodes, PhD
Treasurer                              Jack B. ReVelle, PhD
Secretary                              Jack B. ReVelle, PhD
Delegate                               Frank Wente

We encourage every member to consider volunteering to step up and take the responsibilities of leadership in the ASSE of Long Beach.  Anyone interested in running for office or taking an active role in an appointed office, just let us know.  Volunteering for open offices is always welcome.  The success of our chapter depends of the participation and involvement of the members.  We are looking forward in working toward promoting a dynamic and active chapter.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Just a message to all our members.  We had a very exciting topic on February 9, 2011.  Those that missed our meeting missed a very memorable presentation provided by Hank Cierpich a Fatality Investigator for the "Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation," (FACE) Program for California Department of Public Health. Mr. Cierpich reviewed local cases with examples of how they investigate then create guidelines to prevent recurrence.  There was a wide variety of handouts which are available on the website CA Dept. of Public Health - FACE.  We were encouraged to review these documents and use them free of charge to spread the safety message and help in the workplaces.

Do not miss next month's meeting on March 9, 2011 at the Petroleum Club as we will have an expert discussing Hearing Conservation, "Is the World Really Mumbling or Are My Ears Just Getting Older?"  I have placed our meeting and event schedule on our web site for review,
Chapter Website.

A few more events that are coming up fast.  The California Safety, Health & Environmental 2 day conference is scheduled for April 13 - 14, 2011, and is getting close, check the website,  CA EHS Conference   Also we will be having a half day fully packed seminar May 11 at the Petroleum Club  Both events are on our web site.  Check your calendars and join us for great professional development opportunities.

Respectfully Submitted,

Marianne Thomas

President's Message - November 2010

I just wanted to thank everyone that supported the Joint Technical Symposium.  It was a very successful event and we received great feedback.  If you missed the JTS you should not miss the upcoming April 13-14, 2011 California Safety, Health and Environmental Conference.  It will be held at the Anaheim Orange County Doubletree Hotel.  Check out the Web site for details www.calsafetyconference.com. Our Chapter Secretary Jack ReVelle, Ph.D will be one of the speakers.

The Long Beach ASSE Chapter is only as good as the support from its members.  We are seeking participating members willing to serve the Chapter.  If you are interested and just need to be asked to support the ASSE Long Beach Chapter next year consider it done.  We have many different positions available and we want you. This year and next will be exciting and I encourage each and every one of you to become involved in the activities of our Chapter; this is a true professional growth and networking opportunity.

Respectfully Submitted,
